Parkland Rehabilitation

The National Park Service is seeking public input as we take steps to improve recreational opportunities on public land in the Congress Heights neighborhood of D.C. On Oct. 20, the NPS will host a public meeting to share design ideas for Parkland and hear from residents on how they would like to use the park. The public is invited to comment until Nov. 20.

Parkland, part of the Shepherd Parkway, is a 1.25-acre section of public land between Malcolm X Ave SE and Parkland Place SE, and west of Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE. Currently, the area has a small playground, benches, and shaded grass areas. The NPS is proposing two concepts: one with a large playground and fitness loop, and one with a smaller playground and a nature play area. Both concepts include a picnic area, group gathering spaces, and an entry plaza.
