Widen boardwalk from main boardwalk to front steps of Dean House (HS-13)

Lincoln Home National Historic Site » Widen boardwalk from main boardwalk to front steps of Dean House (HS-13) » Document List

The short wooden boardwalk from the main pedestrian boardwalk on the south side of the Dean House (HS-13) to the east/front door is only 3' wide. To improve pedestrian accessibility and maintenance access for snow removal, the boardwalk should be widened to 5'. The boardwalk runners will be spread further apart to mitigate the wider board. 6"x6" treated oak runners will be installed under rough sawn oak boardwalk lumber. The overall length of the boardwalk will remain approximately 15'. Work will be completed by park maintenance staff who will first check the location of the runners to ensure they do not cut roots or compact the ground around the Lincoln-era basswood tree in the front yard. If the runners will potentially damage the tree, the project will not be completed, and the boardwalks will remain 3' wide. Only the boardwalk lumber will then be replaced to maintain a safe surface.
