Transportation Management Plan

The National Park Service is developing a Transportation Management Plan for Cumberland Island National Seashore. This plan is in response to Public Law 108-447, which the President approved in December of 2004 and included language to adjust the boundary of the Cumberland Island Wilderness by removing three roads from designated and potential wilderness. It also removed the High Point – Half Moon Bluff Historic District from potential wilderness. The law further directed the completion of a management plan which would ensure that not more than eight and no less than five round trips are provided daily for transporting visitors to and from the historic sites located adjacent to Wilderness on the north end of the island.

While this planning document will focus on the transportation of visitors on the north end, it will also incorporate activity on the island's southern half. The planning process will evaluate a range of factors including routes, type of service, mode of transportation, support facilities, infrastructure, and service provider whether it be National Park Service or concessionaire. The potential environmental impacts of any proposed actions or alternatives will be fully considered prior to approval and implementation of a final plan.
