Glacier National Park's environmental assessment (EA) for the proposed Lake McDonald Properties Management Plan is now available for public review and comment. Comments can be submitted electronically here on the park's planning website by clicking the "Open for Comment" project link. The Plan/EA will be available for review and comment for 30 days until March 1.
To address historic properties now under park ownership, the park is proposing an adaptive management approach for seven properties in the Lake McDonald area. Most of the cabins and outbuildings associated with the properties are listed, or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The cabin properties are clustered in several areas around Lake McDonald and comprise approximately seven acres of land. The properties contribute to five historic districts in the Lake McDonald area. Offering a historic lease opportunity to the public, park partners, and non-profit groups is the first priority management option for all but one cabin. In the event that this option cannot be implemented within appropriate timeframes, management options, identified as second, third, and fourth priorities, would then be undertaken.
Public scoping was conducted from July 30, 2010 to August 31, 2010 to provide for early public participation and assist with identifying resource issues and concerns. The park received twenty-nine comments during the scoping period; suggestions and concerns raised during scoping have been addressed in the Plan/EA.
Comments on this Plan/EA can also be sent by mail to Superintendent, Glacier National Park, Attn: Lake McDonald Properties, P.O. Box 128, West Glacier, Montana 59936. The EA may also be requested by calling 406-888-7898.
Thank you for your continued support and interest in Glacier National Park.
