On the evening of June 13, 2024, heavy rain and wind came through downtown Springfield, and damaged the silver maple in the backyard of the Sprigg house (HS-02). One of the main branches broke off and fell on the roof of the house. In the process of removing the limb from the house on June 14, it was discovered that the branch was mostly hollow and bees had set up a hive in it. The rest of that part of the tree was also hollow and it was determined that the tree was no longer safe to remain standing. The tree was considered to be in fair-to-good condition in the Lincoln Home Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) in 2014.

The tree will be cut down to the ground and the stump ground out. Following the CLR suggestions, a similar-sized native tree will be planted near the original stump location.
