Park Section 106 Programmatic Agreement

Grand Canyon National Park » Park Section 106 Programmatic Agreement » Document List

The National Park Service (NPS) is beginning public review of a programmatic agreement to establish a park procedure for more efficient compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) in Grand Canyon National Park.

Section 106 requires federal agencies to consider the effects of projects that are carried out, assisted, funded, permitted, or licensed by the federal government on historic properties. If a federal or federally assisted project has the potential to affect historic properties, a Section 106 review takes place.

The intent of the programmatic agreement (PA) is to establish criteria and procedures to enable the Grand Canyon staff to complete the Section 106 process for routine projects without consulting with the Arizona State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO).

The programmatic agreement was prepared in consultation with the Arizona State Historic Preservation Officer and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.
