Fort San Juan de la Cruz (El Cañuelo) Shoreline Stabilization
The National Park Service (NPS) proposes to improve the shoreline protection along the Fortín San Juan de la Cruz at El Cañuelo Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. The purpose of the project is to help ensure the health and safety of the public and improve the visitor experience while preserving the setting of the Fortín San Juan de la Cruz maritime landscape. This project is needed at this time in order to prevent damage from more frequent and more powerful seasonal hurricanes and to mitigate and remediate the effects of historic and continuing storm damage to the park waterfront cultural landscape and visitor use. The concept will be designed to make the smallest possible imprint on the maritime landscape. The project will stabilize the shoreline and protect the Fortín San Juan de la Cruz maritime landscape and associated Fort buildings from the imminent threat of associated landward migration of the shoreline due to erosion.
Fort San Juan de la Cruz at Cañuelo Beach is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located within the National Park Service (NPS) jurisdiction on Isla de Cabras, west of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The shoreline around the Fort has experienced significant erosional issues and loss of shoreline and beach width from the 2017-2019 storm seasons, sustaining significant damage during Hurricane Maria in 2017.
