Suitland Parkway Trail Extension and Naylor Road Intersection Safety Improvements

National Capital Parks - East » Suitland Parkway Trail Extension and Naylor Road Intersection Safety Improvements » Document List

The National Park Service (NPS) proposes to extend the Suitland Parkway Trail and implement several intersection improvements to address issues with pedestrian safety and connectivity. A new, 0.4-mile trail segment would be built on the north side of Suitland Parkway, connecting the existing trail on the D.C. side of the Parkway to Naylor Road in Prince George's County, Maryland. The NPS is also considering several improvements to enhance safety at the Suitland Parkway and Naylor Road intersection, which has been the site of numerous accidents and pedestrian fatalities. The proposed project would close a gap in the local trail network and provide a safer way for pedestrians and cyclists to reach the Naylor Road Metro Station and local communities.

Suitland Parkway was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 for its association with broad patterns of history and landscape architecture related to the development of the parkway system during the first half of the twentieth century.

The NPS will prepare an environmental assessment (EA) to document and disclose potential environmental impacts that would occur because of project implementation, in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. A public scoping comment period is open until April 25, 2025. The public is encouraged to comment on the preliminary design options for the Suitland Parkway Trail, potential issues with park resources, and any other ideas that the NPS should consider during project development and the environmental impact analysis. To comment, click on "Open for Comment" on the lefthand side of the screen.

A virtual public scoping meeting will be held on April 9, 2025, at 6 p.m. EST. NPS staff will provide information about the proposed project and be available to answer questions. Please visit the Public Scoping Meeting Notice under "Meeting Notices" for more details and how to join the virtual meeting on Microsoft Teams.
