At Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, the National Park Service (NPS) is preparing a development concept plan for the Carter home and property. The project area is a 10.81-acre parcel located north of Church Street in Plains, Georgia. The Carter home and property is currently a secured residence and landscape, but will eventually be opened to the public for interpretive visits.
The subject area is one of four separate units that are collectively managed as the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site. Facilities of note within the area include a designed landscape and memorial garden, residence and attached studio, tennis court and walking path. The area is contiguous with the 1.92-acre U. S. Secret Service compound; this property will be incorporated into this plan as it will eventually be managed by NPS. The plan will examine appropriate facilities for the Carter home and property, including potential new infrastructure needed by visitors, while protecting the site's cultural landscape and historic structures. The plan will define appropriate uses, interpretation, visitor serving infrastructure, functions and operational scenarios, and will establish a consistent, unified strategy to guide decisions on capital improvements, preservation, and development.
